I wrote a couple of weeks ago about the role nutrition plays in a child's ability to focus and learn. For more on this topic, check out NPR's story from a few days ago, A Better Breakfast Can Boost a Child's Brainpower. In short, kids who eat breakfast perform better than those that don't, and kids who eat breakfasts rich in protein and complex carbohydrates perform better than kids who eat things like sugary breakfast cereal. Kind of seems like common sense...but then you walk down the cereal aisle at the supermarket and you realize it's not.
Also have a listen to the story highlighting the role of physical exercise on brain activity and development. (Hint: physical exercise is good for your body and mind).
I realize it's probably not news to many that exercise and proper nutrition will give you a sharper, clearer mind and help you concentrate (although it is interesting to note that the nutrition story has been the most e-mailed story at NPR for 3 days now) but sometimes it's good to be reminded. Children lacking in these areas face a tremendous disadvantage in the classroom and elsewhere.
Update: how about some grapemeal?
Some encouraging news in here.....
